The year has only just begun but already there’s so much activity here at 2RPH. We hope you enjoyed the festive season and the programming we provided.

It was a time of sadness for the families and friends of two of our most outstanding volunteers who recently passed away. The 2RPH station community pays tribute to Philip Boyle, who departed just before Christmas, and Bob Hargreaves whose life ended in early January.

Philip was a prodigious contributor for more than 26 years working on The Australian, innumerable magazines and the finest series of book readings in the station’s history.

Bob Hargreaves spent 40 years working in broadcasting with stints in regional radio, ABC news reading and regional TV before dedicating more than a quarter of a century to the Radio Reading Network, providing the much celebrated Get Together through 1RPH Canberra and 2RPH in Sydney.

Stay tuned over coming months for a reprise of Philip’s The Kings Speech and Bob’s timeless magazine review, Get Together.

In December we welcomed Veronika Aleshina to the team as the new Office Manager. Veronika comes to us directly from 2SER and brings a wealth of experience in project management, volunteer coordination and community broadcasting expertise.

Keith McCarron interviewed Veronika in the latest episode of Signals (on air and podcast) where she gives us a glimpse of her previous achievements.

Also on staff and station news, we’re very pleased to share the news that General Manager, Barry Melville has recently joined the board of Disability Media Australia (DMA).

DMA (formerly RPH Australia) is the national peak body for the Radio Reading Network, community radio services dedicated to informing and empowering the estimated 5 million Australians with a print disability.

Barry said, “Working with DMA will strengthen our station’s commitment to the wider network, and to providing quality services across the country to people with a disability”

We have an array of fascinating new content coming to the airwaves in 2025. First cab off the rank is a really fun collaboration between author, Remo Giuffré, and Radio 2RPH, REMORANDOM Reading.

REMORANDOM is a biannual printed book series featuring snack-sized stories, ideas and observations guaranteed to inform, entertain and inspire a global community of curious readers.

With REMORANDOM Reading, chapters are recorded by a range of contributors in the studios of 2RPH and broadcast, then distributed across Australia throughout the Radio Reading Network, making them widely accessible to a whole new audience.

Keep an ear out for REMORANDOM Readings coming out between shows on the airwaves of 2RPH, or you can follow them on-demand via the podcast.

Finally, tune in to Ablequest next Thursday 21 February for a station first! Marnie Roper recently spoke to CEO of Deaf Connect, Brett Casey. The twist is that it was a three-way call, speaking to Brett via his Auslan interpreter, Duke Moolenaar.

Deaf Connect are Australia’s largest provider of AUSLAN – the Australian Sign Language. They also provide interpreting classes and qualification courses and recently won the Excellence in Service Quality category of the recent NDIS National Disability Awards.

Tune in next Thursday for the full interview and of course you can catch up on every episode of Ablequest on demand at the 2RPH website or your favourite podcast service.
