We were saddened to hear that Lex Marinos died on 13 September 2024.

A famous Australian actor, director and broadcaster, Lex was a good friend and active participant in the community broadcasting movement. Lex became involved as a volunteer in community radio in Melbourne in its formative years and continued that involvement throughout his life in various capacities. He was awarded an OAM for his contribution to the performing arts in 1994.

Lex was also a trainer with the Community Media Training Organisation, running many training sessions for various stations, including for us at Radio 2RPH.

From 2019 Lex teamed up with Patricia (Little Pattie) Amphlett OAM to present three seasons of The Baby Boomers Guide to Life in the 21st Century, broadcast throughout the Australian community radio network, including on Radio 2RPH. The Guide was a multi-award-winning radio program and podcast of entertainment and information for older Australians.

I had the great pleasure of closely working with him for a number of years when he served as Vice-President of the Community Broadcasting Foundation. In his 2014 autobiography Blood and Circuses, Lex describes community broadcasting as “a glorious, chaotic, diverse conglomeration of stations around Australia. Driven by passionate volunteers, they provide access and information to a vast range of communities – Indigenous, ethnic, print-handicapped, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, old and young.”

Lex Marinos was a kind, thoughtful and generous man of many talents, a dear friend and a wonderful story teller, whom we will miss greatly.
