Lighthouse

After noticing media reports of families doing it tough across Sydney’s locked down LGA’s 2RPH has reached out to one of the volunteer organisations recently featured by the Sydney Morning Herald. You can read the story

Lighthouse Community Support

operates from the belief that every thriving family must have a light in times of darkness. The volunteers have been doing a phenomenal job distributing food and other essentials to the many people who are isolated and suffering financial hardship as a result of the pandemic lockdowns.

Hundreds of these households are suffering from COVID-19. Employment opportunities have been curtailed, breadwinners have been stood down, children cannot go to school and extended family members are either cut off from supporting each other or crowded together in unsustainable living conditions. They desperately need basic food and hygiene supplies.

Gandhi Sindyan, the founder of Lighthouse Community Support, has driven 150 meals to nurses at Westmead Hospital. The boot of his van is stocked with heaters, nappies, electric blankets, baby formula and vegetables – just so he’s prepared.

“Our objective is not just meals; we try to make sure we look holistically at our families and essentials that help them,” he said. On the weekend he delivered to a 17-year-old boy with COVID-19 in Blacktown who had diabetes but no insulin. The night before, he spent time on the phone with a 19-year-old girl with the disease, who has elderly parents and confessed how scared she was.

Bring your donations to 2RPH at St Helen’s Community Centre at 184 Glebe Point Rd, Glebe NSW 2037

between 11am and 2pm every Tuesday in September

and buzz up to Nicola. We will organise a contact-free pick-up with Lighthouse.

The community needs:

  • Non-perishable food, being mindful of cultural sensitivities. So plenty of legumes, cooking oil, rice for middle-Eastern families, pasta for other families, canned goods such as tuna and long-life milk.
  • Personal hygiene and sanitary products, as well as baby goods such as (environmentally approved) baby wipes and nappies.

If you have any queries call Nicola on 0409716883 or Ruth on 0425253293.

In times of crisis this is what a community radio station is here for!
