Liz joins 2RPH Board

Fri, 27 July 2018

Elizabeth (Liz) Moore was elected to the 2RPH Board in February. Here, she talks to Administration Assistant Danielle Hanrahan about her history with the station and why she decided to get involved on the Board.

Can you tell us a little about your history with 2RPH?

In early 2017 I was appointed as a Consultant to 2RPH to help secure the new Station Manager – a task which was a very unique recruitment and one for which I saw the Board’s and members’ deep engagement. I was exceptionally pleased with the process and commitment the Board showed to this appointment and delighted with the outcome.

I also spent a short time stepping into a caretaker role before Sancha Donald [General Manager] commenced her appointment which gave me a great insight into the operations of the station. At the conclusion of this, I provided the Board and Sancha with a list of recommendations for operational improvements and am pleased to say many of those items have been or are being attended to.

Why did you decide to run for election to the Board?

With the change in leadership at 2RPH, the need to rejuvenate processes and a particular emphasis being placed on operations and Governance, I was delighted to accept the offer to apply for membership of the board.

Apart from a strong Governance framework and robust operations I have a deep belief that engagement with the disability sector is vital to the continued success, growth and sustainability of 2RPH. I hope we can engage fully with Vision Australia, Blind Citizens Australia and the NDIS to make our offerings tailored to our community.

What do you enjoy about being part of 2RPH?

As a person with vision impairment who is legally blind, I appreciate that 2RPH can offer reading services to people who are blind or have low vision, as well to the many others in our audience who have print restrictions or a preference for hearing media.

Are there any particular programs you try to tune into?

I am a huge fan of the newspapers! Particularly the Herald.

What’s something you do in your spare time?

As I work in my own business consultancy time off is a wonderful thing! I listen to many audiobooks through the Vision Australia Library and Audible as they are on demand and suit my varied schedule. I have a great interest in Australian history both indigenously and since colonisation. I love my AFL (go the Tigers), theatre, live music, good wine, good food and sharing my time with friends and family.

Open forum: is there anything else you’d like to add Liz?

I am passionate about the need to change the underpinning impression, in terms of legal title, for our station. I cringe at the notion of our legal entity tile being, “Radio for the Print Handicapped”.

Let me explain, as a person with multiple disabilities the word “handicapped” is greatly offensive to me.  I believe we can remain with the handle of 2RPH as it is working and consistent nationally, however, I would like to lead the charge to remove the word “Handicapped” from our front door and from all of our legal documentation including our constitution and from the RPH community as a whole. I welcome members, listeners, volunteers and staff thoughts on this.

I am excited for the future of the station and eager to assist a highly capable Board, a dedicated group of volunteers and staff, and an engaged membership base to deliver radio reading services.
