Robert Estcourt was educated at Cape Town University and Exeter University where he gained a Masters in Finance. Subsequently he worked for an investment bank in Johannesburg where he became an Assistant General Manager. In 1986 AMP recruited him to head their investment research division. Over the next 18 years he led AMP's investment research division, its investment strategy division, AMP Capital operations in New Zealand, was a director of AMP Capital Investments and many of its operating companies, The GIO run off and AMP Strategy, and non-insurance international operations.
Since leaving AMP he has founded and listed a company, helped establish an investment placement agency where he still has an interest, nurtured investment start-up companies and sat on investment committees.
Currently he is Chair of the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and sits on its finance and investment committees. He chairs the Royal College of Opthalmologists Investment Committee, is a member of the Australasian Sleep Association Finance and Risk committee and is a consultant to accounting and adviser services.
