Suzie and Janelle Hatherly

We count ourselves lucky to be a place where successive generations can contribute to giving back to their community. There are a couple of family connections among the 2RPH volunteers, one of whom is mother and daughter, Janelle and Suzie Hatherly. We spoke to Suzie about her involvement at 2RPH, volunteering alongside her mum, Janelle, and what she loves about the station.

When did you start at 2RPH?

I joined 2RPH in around 2003, back when I was in high school.

What do you do at 2RPH?

I’m a volunteer reader, member and, as of 2016, a 2RPH Board member. Over the years I’ve read different programs, both live-to-air and pre-recorded; including Junior Journal and New Scientist. Today, I record Frankie magazine, and Mum (Janelle) and I also co-present Galleries and Gardens.

Why did you decide to come onboard?

Mum introduced me to the station and I decided to join after hearing how much she enjoyed it. I was excited to do something meaningful for others, learn new skills and be part of a great community - and I still feel that about 2RPH today.

What do you enjoy about volunteering here?

There is so much to love about volunteering at 2RPH! As I’m sure all our volunteers would agree, I really value being able to give time to something that helps others. At the same time, I also feel like 2RPH offers so much to us all – the opportunity to meet new people, read interesting material and be part of a strong community. I’m delighted that joining the Board has allowed me to more fully support this truly unique and special organisation to deliver its critical service.

What are your thoughts on being able to share your time at 2RPH with your mum?

Mum and I have shared nearly 15 years together at 2RPH, and my mother-in-law, Evelyn, has also joined in recent years – so we’ve a real family connection! Mum and I so enjoy producing programs together; selecting articles and music, and taking turns to manage the console. I think Mum will always be the most skilful at estimating article length though! We also use time before we record to have lunch or dinner at one of the nearby restaurants, which gives us a great chance to catch up.

You can catch Suzie presenting Frankie magazine on Sundays at 7:30pm every fortnight, with repeats on Tuesdays at 3:30pm.

Galleries and Gardens also airs on Fridays at 9:30pm every fortnight, with repeats on Saturdays at 5pm. There are some temporary presenting arrangements in place due to holiday activities and Suzie’s wedding over the New Year period. Janelle has presented recent programs alone and Suzie will return in the New Year, with Evelyn Foltyn filling in for Janelle until February 2018.
